Skin is not a fixed thing with a permanent type. It responds to the season, to how much you slept, to the water you wash in, to the month you are in and to whatever you have been putting on it at home. Which makes the standard opening question, what is your skin type, a slightly odd place to begin. The more useful question is what your skin has been doing lately.
Season changes more than you think
In Tirana the difference between February and August is dramatic. Winter brings indoor heating, cold wind and skin that goes tight by mid-afternoon. Summer brings humidity, sun protection, air conditioning and congestion around the nose and chin. The same person genuinely needs a different facial in each. A rich nourishing treatment in August can sit heavily on the skin, and a deep cleansing facial in January can leave winter skin sore. Book for the weather you are actually living in.
Three questions worth answering before you book
- What has your skin done in the last two weeks: gone tight and flaky, gone shiny and congested, or reacted to something new
- What are you genuinely using at home, including the products you started with good intentions and abandoned
- Is there an event coming up, and if so how many days do you have before it
The last question matters more than most people expect. Extractions and firm exfoliation want a week of space before a wedding, not two days. If you are short of time, a hydrating, massage-led facial is both the safer choice and the better-looking one.
When a longer appointment earns its place
An hour is enough for a very good facial. Ninety minutes buys something different: sequences repeated rather than performed once, two masks instead of one, and enough time for each layer to absorb before the next goes on. That extra half hour is worth paying for if your skin is dry, mature or sensitised, and for anyone whose main complaint is that their skin feels uncomfortable rather than that it looks a certain way. For congestion, the deciding factor is not length at all. It is patience, and knowing when to stop extracting.
What you should leave with
Skin that looks calm rather than red and punished. A clear description of what your therapist actually saw, in ordinary language rather than ingredient jargon. And a short routine you will realistically follow, with a note of what to expect over the coming weeks. If you are handed a list of eight products and no explanation, something has gone wrong. Facial treatments in Tirana should make your routine at home simpler, not longer.
